Now, it is about legacy for him. People bring up that they should sign him for his "farewell tour", much like the Kobe campaign. Did no one else notice how awful that campaign was for the Lakers? At this point, his being on or around this team will be a distraction at best, and an implosion at worst. You have to judge him on a "what can he provide for me now" type scale. The answer is very few games of spot minutes. Hardly worth the negatives he brings.
Do whatever it takes to get him as far away from this team as possible...and do it quickly.
To be fair, do we even know what's going on?
Until we do... this kind of kneejerk black/white stance seems a bit myopic.
We don't know exactly what is going on, but there are more and more data points that lend themselves to forming a conclusion.
What we know:
-the Wolves owe KG $8 million for next year
-there is substantial discord between KG and the Wolves organization
-KG has met with Taylor this summer, but not with Thibs. In fact, there are no reports about KG having contact with anyone within the organization since season end...players or management
-in that meeting, KG said his issue was more than just his knee, it's his entire leg
-despite his physical issues, KG wants to play this year
-when KG was healthy last year, he was our best +/- player
-Sam Mitchell says KG was unhappy about the way Sam's firing was handled
-KG has a strong personality, capable of impacting a locker room either positively or
negatively
-the Wolves have an imbalance between big men and PG/wings on their roster, and there are serious concerns about whether KG and Pek can play this year or not
That's a lot of information that we know, either because it is public information or one of our posters heard something from Wolves' higher ups. I'm my opinion, that's a lot of information to lead to an informed conclusion about whether we want him back or not. There are a lot of other things that we don't know, but may be factors in whether we want him back. For instance:
1) does he have a bad relationship with Wig
2) does Thibs have a free agent in mind that he really covets if they were able to buy KG out
3) do the Wolves have an insurance policy that they can cash in if KG can't play, and are his injuries substantial enough to trigger the policy
4) can Pek contribute much this year, in which case there is less need for KG and more need for another wing.
I weigh all of this information, some that we know and some that we don't, and come down on the same side as Hicks. Flip built a really nice roster and Theydon have only made it better this summer with their draft and free agent moves, and they can't allow a disgruntled former superstar to impact the locker room. KG's effectiveness when he was able to play last year and the fact that they owe him $8 million regardless of whether he plays or not makes this a complicated decision, but I still conclude it is time to move on. The sooner they buy his out and get this behind them, the sooner we can return to the optimistic vibe of the summer.
