Re: FIBA qualifying Bennett hype Thread
Cam, Do you think Stauskaus will show something this year with the 76ers?
I am pulling for AB, but he is going to have to dominate in pre-season. I will be curious to see how Clint Capella does this year with the Rockets.

The Wolves have two PFs putting up really nice stats in international play...AB and Nemanja Bjelica. Let's hope they both can keep up this level of play when training camp starts.
I'm not too concerned about Wiggins' performance, because we know what he can do. Canada kind of coasted to victory in this game (AB only played 14 minutes) so Andrew may not have been too motivated. Still, it was nice to see him get 4 offensive rebounds...that's a part of his game that has some potential.
2 Rebs for a big sounds pathetic but it was in less than 15 mins and what I always look at is whether that player's team got boards and in this case yes. Canada almost doubled up Brazil in that category (43-24) so Bennett not getting a lot of rebounds seems fine in that context because without a doubt someone else on his team got them.
I remember two specific debates on this board where some argued that Dieng's a better rebounder than Pek and the retort was that the Wolves still rebounded the ball better with Pek than with Dieng.
Also, we weren't hearing about team rebounds when Thad Young was here. It's a pick-and-choose type debate, I suppose...
In the end, though, all that matters is your team out-rebounding the others.
The "team rebounding" versus "individual rebounding" thing is a bit murky because you need quite a large sample of data to conclude that a player positively impacts team rebounding. In Pek's case, there is a large enough body of evidence to make it a pretty definitive conclusion: When he plays, we generally win the rebound battle, regardless if he gets a lot himself. This has been true since his rookie year.
As for Dieng and AB, there is not enough data yet to form a definitive conclusion, but I think it's a fair hypothesis to say that neither of these guys have a real meaningful effect on team rebounding - and perhaps even negative.

I wouldn't start with that hypothesis myself. Career Total Rebound Percentages per Basketball Reference:
Dieng - 17.0%
Pek - 15.2%
Re: FIBA qualifying Bennett hype Thread
Maybe I should clarify that my assessment on Bennett's 2 rebounds and team Canada winning the board battle in that game was just in the context of one game. I also wasn't suggesting Bennett had an impact on team rebounding. I just thought it was easy to overlook his 2 rebounds in less than 15 mins when his team rebounded well and he has been rebounding well (so far) in the 2 tourneys he has participated in this summer.
Also just for the record I've taken the position since last summer that I thought Thad Young was/is a plenty worthwhile player regardless of his impact as a rebounder.

That's not what I'm talking about. Those numbers are individual rebound percentage. The discussion at hand is a player's impact on overall team rebounding percentages while on the floor. Our team rebounding % is much higher when Pek plays than when he doesn't.....That's not the case with Dieng even though he himself is a decent rebounder.

I expect he'll be given a longer leash in Philly, yes. Their guard situation isn't like Sacramento's where they already had a young starter ahead of him in McLemore. It was a weird pick when they made it and it's best for Stauskas to have been traded out of there. In Philly, he's among a bunch of other guys just trying to carve out a role in the NBA. I still believe in his shooting ability, I don't think it just disappeared, and with Okafor and Noel playing together, they're going to need guys to stretch the floor. Him and Covington should be their wings more often than not, IMO.

Poor game by AB after another double double the night before. He's now averaging 13.5 and 8.5 in only 23 minutes for the tournament.
Nice to see Wiggins bounce back with a good game after a couple sub-par efforts.
Re: FIBA qualifying Bennett hype Thread
So it looks like based on the schedule that Canada is likely to play another 8-10 games in this next tourney. AB has played 9 games already so that will add up to a decent chunk of games. To me that is what AB needs (and a lot of other young players) as much as anything to play some basketball sonthisbis a good thing.
From what I have seen he seems comfortable, excited, more engaged in a way I havent seen him before. He would get excited about a play here and there but here he looks more like he feels he belongs and has that confidence. If that continues the next few days will that transition over to him at the NBA level? Idk but I would say for a guy that I don't really have a lot of hope for but I have tried to keep an open mind about he has done well this summer so far and it's worth considering.
