Indeed, we were 17th in 3-point makes just two years ago thanks largely to Ricky Adelman's offense and having a healthy Kevin Love and Kevin Martin. Guess who was feeding them a bunch of those shots? Ricky.

Ricky's primary disadvantage is that he himself is not a prolific 3-point shooter while many of his PG contemporaries are. But that doesn't mean he can't get others good looks from beyond the arc.

Here are Wolves on/off 3-point shooting numbers during the time Ricky has been here

2011-12 Ricky on court 21.4 3PA with 33.1 3P%
2011-12 Ricky off court 23.1 3PA with 33.4 3P%
2012-13 on 16.1 3PA with 30.7 3P%
2012-13 off 20.8 3PA with 30.4 3P%
2013-14 on 20.3 3PA with 35.8 3P%
2013-14 off 22.9 3PA with 31.1 3P%
2014-15 on 14.2 3PA with 30.8 3P%
2014-15 off 15.7 3PA with 33.7 3P%
2015-16 on 13.9 3PA with 26.9 3P%
2015-16 off 17.9 3PA with 37.1 3P%

So every year Wolves have shot clearly less 3-pointers with Ricky on court vs. when he is off court and only once their 3-point shooting percentage was clearly better with Ricky. That was 2013-14 when he played majority of his minutes with Love and Martin that were by far the best 3-point shooters that Wolves had.

This years numbers are awful at least partially because Ricky plays plenty of minutes with KG and Tay but still it looks like teams have adjusted to Ricky's passing and are staying close with shooters when he drives to basket. This means clearly less opportunities for finding open 3-pointers.

Of course we can have offense with more three pointers even with Ricky like Adelman's corner offense was but I have hard time to see that we would have elite 3-point shooting offense with Ricky running point.

Thanks for posting those numbers they are interesting. I'll point out that the guys replacing Rubio were more volume 3 point shooters especially JJ right? I will also add that when has Rubio really played the type of offensive scheme that you would expect him to best create 3 point opportunities? He hasn't run in a scheme like a Nash did and sure he isn't Nash but I think one of the legit frustrations we have had was that despite him playing for sole very good offensive coaches those guys especially Adelman after his rookie year didn't seem to get the most out of Rubio. Maybe in the NBA we live in now just giving Rubio the ball and letting him work his magic isn't the way to go but sometimes I don't think he has really had the system and/or players to get what you sort of expect out of him. on this toster he is probably feeding guys in other spots other than 3's because that's where they are successful AND that's what the offense tends to get them. I don't want to let Rubio off the hook here but I think these are things to bring up with this interesting topic.

Thanks for doing the work, I've been saying this for quite some time .
It's not that Ricky isn't finding those guys and getting them the ball but the defenders certainly aren't having to chase after their guy closing out with a hand in the shooters face . They're already in good defensive position becuz they dont sink down into the lane on help D .

Just for fun...

The Minnesota starters have combined to make 47 three pointers this season.

The best "volume" three point shooter on the team (K. Martin at 37.8%) is no longer on the court and may never play another game in MN.

He should drive and pass or shoot 3s. That's all he should do.
Bazz should be spot to in one corner and Dieng in other

That's how I see it. Smitch promised to give Dieng some corners 3s but we know how it goes.

Shooting and defense, shooting and defense, shooting and defense. Every player we have on the roster should be able to do one of those two things really well, with at least a couple of guys that can do both. Right now we have no one who excels at both (although I think KAT will get there eventually) and too many guys that can't do either.
