I was more worried that Flip would sign Thad to a deal similar to what the Nets just did. I don't see Thad as a winning BB player, which is also the reason that I have no issue with the KG deal. Say what you want about mentoring, but there is just something about having a future "HOF" player getting pumped up whether it be on the floor or on the bench as well as always being in someones ear. Thad never showed any of that.
The Nets were out of the playoff race before the trade. They ended up making it after the trade and Thad was one the biggest reasons why. How do you explain that?
Well Thad has gone to the playoffs a few times in the east so... Saying Thad isn't a winning basketball player seems like a pretty low blow to me.
Here is the deal the way I see it of where this board is at with the KG deal.
1. We got KG in the trade and it became obvious he was coming back beyond this year so this deal is no surprise. We have been preping ourselves for this deal in either positive way or negative or both. Lol
2. There was wide speculation on what the number ($$) would be for KG both in how much he was actually worth or how much he would get. Quite frankly everyone is probably just breathing a sign of relief it's less than 10 million a year. Almost everyone here wanted this deal to be much less than KG got so it's not like anyone is thrilled with 8 million per year. 3-5 million I think posters here would have a much larger consensus of "good/great deal".
3. There are a couple posters here that are against KG coming back at any number. Not everyone if for KG being back.
4. Cap ramifications for next year. Maybe KG's deal won't make much difference next year but I cant just dismiss that number completely. I really doubt we spend much next season but what if the right guy is available and we find we have nothing at PF? Maybe we wish we could have made a bigger offer to a guy. I can't have it both ways saying "no way pick up Bennett's deal" and be perfectly fine with KG's 8 million.
Where I am at is if we are talking 4 million a year for KG and he plays even 50 productive games each of the next 2 years at around his same impact of the last couple years I doubt you will find too many FAs that will actually impact your team for that kind of money.
Then you have the idea KG will provide some vet leadership. I don't know if that will make guys better on the court or translate to wins but this franchise has a real problem with absolute lack of leadership especially vet players. We need a legit vet leader and KG brings that. That value could be included for the 4 million I would be comfortable with. It I could also tack on another million and probably be fine with it.
I like KG is back I just think he is anywhere from 2-4 million a year overpaid. It helps we got a good deal on Bjelica to help counteract KG's deal. It's done so let's see how it plays out.
