So why give up anything for a guy they'd be stuck paying $14+M off the bench next year?
[Note: For example, Rondo. I know, I know. It's unlikely because of just how much of a punk he's become. But let's just say he's engaged... he can bring most of what Rubio can bring at virtually no risk or expense. There'll be other guys out there,]
Abe, I don't think they are looking for just some cheap pickup. LeBron and Irving are literally the only two guys on that team averaging 2+ assists. They are really hurting. The other thing to factor in is the Rubio-Love connection.
Rubio is also big enough to play in a back court with Irving, giving Cleveland three elite ball handlers on the court together for stretches. He could even start games with Irving with J.R. Smith out, even though he may not be out there to finish games.
Yeah. I just don't see it. $14M AND giving up assets for a guy to play 15 mpg? Otherwise, I don't see why they'd bring in Rubio. Cleveland works because they shoot A TON of three pointers. And they have all-world creator in James.
By bringing in Rubio, they're taking the ball out of James' hands. Or, by keeping Rubio on the court, every team in the league will leave him wide open to shoot. It's better than virtually every other alternative.

But even with that all-world creator, Love hasn't been as effective in offense there than he was in Minnesota with Rubio creating opportunities for him. I think that with Ricky Cleveland would be looking someone whom would help them when they are resting Irving or James and keep their minutes lower in general. Ricky feeding Love would destroy most of the benches of other teams.
Also I think that LeBron would be OK to even play some time off the ball with Rubio. I could see Ricky averaging between 20 to 25 minutes per game in Cleveland during regular season. In playoffs his minutes would be of course cut like all other bench players minutes typically are.
I think that they need to find someone to take J.R. Smith and his awful contract from their hands, before they could make a move to get Ricky. With Korver and healthy Shumbert playing career year, I think J.R. is not anymore needed.

Maybe.
A couple things about Love...
His PER and TS% are slightly above career norms. He's just used differently, quite possibly because the Cavs have more/better offensive options than the Wolves did. But you know where the biggest difference is?
Assists. The second half of his last season in MN, Love was within one assist of a triple double something like 9 or 10 times. He is a very good passer. Using him more as a passer could help what's bugging them a bit now, too. He's at only 1.8 apg... only his rookie year was worse.
But really, my point is that like the other championship teams of the recent past... they will have first picks for veterans chasing championship rings. And there will be those guys out there. They're always available... for FREE.
They just have to hold the fort for a few weeks (they will) and help will be on the way.
Will the vet min guy do a job on Curry defensively like Rubio can? Stop looking at only one side of the game.
And as of now Cavs look quite far behind Warriors. A vet min guy won't erase the gap.

Yup, that's my point. We aren't talking about the need for a caretaker PG for a few spot minutes, but a guy that can actually make some things happen and play 20-25+ minutes per game. Again, Rubio can play PG with Irving off the ball and they don't lose much in terms of size.
Cleveland is dealing with a different animal this year in Golden State. These guys probably have the greatest starting lineup ever assembled. LeBron is panicking a bit, and this is after they got Korver!

Yeah I'm sure Lebron would he fine playing off Rubio getting some easy buckets as a result.
Korver is a FA after this year and unless he decides to take less money or something he gonna make at least double what he is making now. The Cavs may still need JR.

So...Rubio will bridge that gap?
he can get it closer than some guy like Sessions.
To be fair, this move is mostly for the regular season... to ease up the heavy minutes James is playing.
For example, Delladova's minutes were 24 during the regular season and then dropped every round of the playoffs... down to only 8 mpg in the Finals. The rotations will get much shorter when the Cavs play the Warriors in the Finals... just like last season.
Other options to be had for "free"...
- Devin Harris
- Deron Williams
- Jameer Nelson
Will they help in the Finals? Marginally. Will they help rest Irving's and James' legs during the regular season so they can play 42- 45 mpg in the Finals? Definitely.

That's what this move (and James whine) is about.
Yeah you pretty much nailed it Abe. The reality is the Cavs have 2 PGs on their roster (plus Lebron) Irving and an Undrafted rookie FA Felder who has shown flashes. There is simply no reason with the depth of PG position at the end of rosters and out of the league that they don't have a better option than that. Like you said there will be decent options and they could even be players that give some worthwhile contributions. If the Cavs were going to get Rubio they would have to deal a guy from their roster who has been useful to them and the Wolves would have to want to take that guy/s back. I don't see it happening.
