Here lies the problem with Derrick Williams at the pro level... if you're not better than average at multiple things... you MUST be really good at one thing.
The league has become about filling out a roster with specialists. Reggie Evans plays because he can grab rebounds and other junk. Steve Novak and Matt Bonner can shoot 3s. Et al.
What can Williams do to set himself apart? Honestly, I don't know.
What is D-Will good at?

I agree Abe. However, what does Shved do well? I've never been a big fan of Williams, but I think I'm even less of a fan of Shved. It seems like Adelman plays Shved due to "match-ups", but as others have said, why not force the other team to match up with us? We had a Shved-Martin-Barea trio last night where we could have just as easily had Williams in place of Shved.
We don't see Williams' work ethic and attitude day in and day out at practice, but I can sympathize with those that are incredulous at his DNP-CD last night.
I'm afraid our bench is in trouble this year if one or two of these guys don't step up in a big way. We know what we can expect from Barea, Cunningham, and Turiaf. We need more from that 9th and/or 10th spot.

Q... I address Shved in another thread. I don't know what his role is and that's so vital for bench guys.
Is he a scorer off the bench? Distributor? Minutes-eater?
I don't think he does anything especially well either. Heck, I don't know if he even deserves a spot in the rotation right now. Or, in the league.

Shved is above average creating offense for others when you consider he is a wing type player. I know he screws up plenty but I think he is more dynamic at what he is good at than what Williams brings at his positive aspects. Shved no doubt needs to even out his game more but I want him to stay aggressive on offense at least creating for others.

I'll believe it when I see it. He came back from injury last year and looked rusty and limited. So even if he's active, that won't mean he's effective.

The answer is: how do we know? We've done a ridiculously piss poor job developing him.

WW........if you read Lip's post game write up, it looks like even he is not that interested in developing himself. We can't make him be interested in developing himself. Improvement in shooting, for example, is something that takes a personal commitment. It sounds like lots of people close to him question his personal commitment.
Much of this discussion feels like the discussion about Beasely's flaws.
