Randle sucks

We can argue whether it's a small sample size or not... but in 15 career playoff games...

Julius Randle has shot 34.4% fg with 3.9 TOs.

I saw a New York fan say the first year Randle was in the playoffs he was a on a bad team and was basically defended like Ant gets defended with double and triple teams. In Randle's second playoffs he was injured and probably wouldn't have played if it wasn't the playoffs.

Maybe the discussion should be why is he never healthy for the playoffs!

To be fair, he's been injured and failed to finish the last three seasons healthy.




[Note: Meh to the spacing in year 1. He was returning from injury the next season... so that one might have some merit. ]

FWIW the first playoff season he had been playing over 37mpg in the regular season. That was the one where Thibs switched up the rotation in the playoffs.

Yeah, while I'm sure there will be a honeymoon period with Randle ("Look how strong and physical he is - we really needed that on this team, how refreshing!"), it won't take long for the warts to show up. Wildwolf has given us all fair warning.

Hard to see how a ball-stopping PF without much of an outside shot helps us with our offensive struggles. But boy, he can score in isolation if you clear out and give him 20 seconds, yay!

A very similar post is being written and read on Knicks message boards about Towns.

To me it's worse to me that Towns shot so few 3's. The year in Abe's sample that Randle shot over 8 threes a game he was hitting over 34% of them which isn't terrible.

It would be interesting to have data on how many wide open 3's teams let Randle take.

Yep. My posts in this thread are just very high level statistics. The playoff stuff ignores context entirely.

Both players have their flaws. There will definitely be things about Randle that are super duper good. He's a very good player. We'll be singing his praises soon enough.

Plus, he comes with that other guy who will also have his moments.

Good video Tim, thanks for posting. While it does give me an appreciation for some of the positives of Randle, the one big caveat with his interior passing is that he's playing with stone-hands Rudy instead of I-Hart or Mitchell Robinson. No way can Rudy handle those interior feeds Randle throws.

I do think we will see some "point Julius" this season where he basically brings the ball up and takes his guy while the others space the floor and Rudy sits in the dunker's spot. This will give Ant a break and negate the spacing issue a bit since he'll have the ball in his hands. It will be a more offensively potent version of SloMo.

Where the problems start to arise is when Ant has the ball in his hands. Rudy and Randle's guys are just going to form a wall in the lane and it will be very difficult for him to get to the basket. And we know he's not the greatest interior passer in tight spaces.

Stick Randle in the corner. He can hit that shot at a high clip and Ant can find him. Now his defender will still collapse quite a bit, it'll be up to Ant to either make the right pass or if the defender doesn't collapse quick enough finish at the rim. I don't like Randle at the traditional KAT spots on the deeper threes.

Ant has been talking about one of the biggest things he worked on this summer is catch and shoot 3's. He also spoke about what he learned playing with the team USA, and that he learned a lot about operating without the ball and navigating to get open for clean looks. He mentioned learning a lot from Curry this summer.
