Great game to watch.

Abe’s ok. Not my favorite poster, but ok. I just don’t see how you call Joan awkward. Joan looks anything but awkward to me - if anything he is a smooth operator out there. I had to stop reading your post at that point… but I’ll give you another chance, once the paint on my wall has dried 😉
He is smooth, quick twitch athlete. His positioning, reading the play and timing are a bit awkward overall, sure. His BB IQ is still very raw. Still, I really like his potential and upside long term. Great draft pick.

Now Dilly, ehh. I kind of think he'd be best served on another team given some minutes and try to build up his confidence. While we get back a proven player, even just for depth/injury. IDK how much we'd value a depth guy, maybe a guy who can step in for Bones if his game sours.

I'm high on Joan's future, but I agree that Joan looks awkward out there. I chuckled when WildWolf called him our baby deer, because he reminds me of one...both because it looks like he hasn't grown into his adult body yet, and because he often has a "deer in the headlights" look to him. Makes sense...he's only played a few years of basketball, and most of those years he was coached in a language he was not comfortable with. But he's only going to get better. He'll learn how to box out on the defensive boards, and his defensive rebounding will get as good as his offensive rebounding. And as he watches Rudy play more, he'll gain a better understanding of where he needs to be on defense in all circumstances. Finchy has said he is going to get some non-garbage minutes as the season progresses, and I think he can help us.

The best thing Dilly can do is get in the weight room. His weakness is strength.

Yeah, that would help, especially with his poor finishing around the rim. I've changed my mind about his 3-point shooting in the last couple weeks though. His form looks better to me, and his 3-pointer last night looked clean and repeatable. And after a bad start, he's 5 for 12 in December and January. If he can shoot like that, hustle on defense, and not turn the ball over, I see him as a nice rotational piece next year. And he just turned 21. I don't want to see him traded unless we get something really good in return.

Is this type of growth out of reach for Ant? I think the evidence we have shows he can make anything happen. I would expect this will go as far as Finch wants it to.

I want to, but I just don't see it with Dillingham. He's jitterbug quick with the ball. He's young. He's got a knack for passing.

But he's just so short, he'll always be a big defensive liability, especially in the playoffs, when teams would target the hell out of him and probably play him off the court. I honestly think his arm length even looks a bit short for his already short height.

Theoretically, if he were stronger he could try to attack the rim more directly and try to draw fouls instead of settling for those very low percentage floaters and bank-shots high off the glass while he's sailing sideways out of bounds. But even if he were stronger, I still don't think he'd have the length to finish. And yes, he's just 21, but having played his whole life as probably the shortest guy on the floor, I just don't see him developing the mindset of trying to go through guys at the rim to draw fouls.

And personally, I've always thought his jump shot looked kinda funky. He turns his hips sideways, drifts with his feet, and he seems to have two motions on the shot with inconsistent timing. He pops up in one motion, and then shoots it with another, and I'd feel more confident with that shot motion if the timing were consistent. Some of the greatest shooters like Ray Allen and Klay are also two-motion shooters, but they were both masters of squaring up and you could set a clock by the timing between their jump and their release. Other than those guys, most of the good shooters have a more fluid shooting motion than Dillingham, which makes it so much easier to dial in the range. I don't think this is nearly as big a deal as his size, but if he were going to earn minutes, he'd really have to be a floor stretcher at least, and I'm wary of that happening.

The biggest thing with Dillingham for me though is his size. There are some good short players. Trae Young and Garland come to mind, but I think they are even bigger than Dillingham and both of them are frankly much more poised and in control with the ball and more fluid shooters (and one just got traded, and the other's getting talked about because he can't fit with Mitchell). I think in comparison to Garland and Young, Dillingham always looks to move kind of skittishly. Like an uncertain Bassy Telfair. He's quick as hell and has amazing handles, but that kind of movement on the floor also makes it tougher for teammates to anticipate passes.

I could still be wrong. I really hope I am. But I just don't have much confidence in Dillingham ever really becoming a particularly valuable player. And I suspect the rest of the league has seen enough too that we could not expect to get much of anything in return for him, honestly, even on a rookie contract.

Some very good points, Drew, and I agree that Rob would not bring back much right now in a trade. And I also have had concerns about his size and his shooting form. But I think his biggest size issue is bulk, not height or length. His wingspan is 6-3 which sounds tiny. But it's exactly the same as Trae Young's, and only 2 inches less than the average wing span for NBA PGs. He's never going to have a strong NBA body, but there's reason to believe that a good gym regimen can add some bulk.

The shooting issue is a concern also, and I agree with your assessment of his form. But I wonder if he has been working with a shooting coach, because his form looked a lot better to me on his 2 3-pointers Tuesday night. One even went in cleanly, as opposed to the ones he's rattled in this season! I look at his shooting success in college and his improved form, and I continue to hold out hope that he will be a good rotational player. There aren't many players as quick as he is. I don't see him contributing much this season (unless we have a rash of injuries), but I think he will absorb a lot of Mike's minutes next season.

Finishing at the rim is the other big problem for Rob. But we have all seen 6 foot guards who have developed moves to allow them to score against taller opponents. Rob and Ant seem to have a great relationship...they are often next to each other on the bench. And Ant credits coach Chris Hines for improving his game in the off season...working against a 6-8 defender has to help. I'd like to see Ant adopt Rob and invite him to participate in his sessions with Hines. Lots of reps at the rim against a guy half a foot taller than him might help him improve his inside game.

Obviously I'm higher on Rob than most here, and that gives me a lot of pause. I am seeing some green shoots though...

Obviously, I've been lower on Dillingham than most here... so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

But besides the size and strength, the poise, the instinctual chops, the disjointed effort-heavy shooting form, the statistical atrocities, et al... where does his one agreed-upon strength (quickness) show up on the court?

It's not quick enough to get him by people to finish at the rim. It's not even quick enough to get into the lane consistently to create for others. Any separation ability he has is either made up by the defender at the rim or compromised by his lack of basketball smarts/knowhow/instinct.

He's just not able to use his speed and quickness to put himself and his teammates into favorable positions. And there's been little or no statistical growth from his rookie season to this year.

I believe that the only reason he hasn't been traded yet is that his value around the league has plummeted.

Some teams wouldn't want him even if he did show improvement just because of the size thing. Some teams don't want to make that sort of investment into guys that can be targeted or limited based on their size. Then, you have those who can see how he's struggled on the court beyond just the size stuff. Plus, you have others who see the price tag and lack of growth and may not have the means to make him fit.

Yeah if he cant use that quick first step to score sometimes he's not going to last in the league. Its too bad, he handles the ball with a command of the game. He just doesnt seem to know what to do next. He's in his head and its ruining him. I am really surprised he hasnt had a stint in Iowa. I think dominating down there would be great for him.

His shot to me, same with what Drew said is awkward looking. It could be effective long term, but still, it's just another question mark with having non ideal form. Then his length is an issue and he doesn't know how to get off a good shot driving to the rim. It could be learned and weight can be put on, but he needs playing time to do so really.

I wouldn't be against getting a backup PG for him, a proven player. I still say his chance to become good or great is very slim. I did think he could be a backup, but I am questioning that now too.

The reality is and listening to other NBA fans, they say the pick is a bust. That does seem likely. His best chance to probably succeed long term is on another team.
