Which QB?

Pick up to three. Who do you want the Vikings to sign or trade for?

I'm going with Willis, Kyler and Kirky Boy. I think any of the three would be a upgrade in talent and ability over Wentz/Brosmer.

Kirk might be my favorite pick, he knows the offense. Still looks like he can step in or even start over JJ if he earns the job. I'm intrigued by Willis and Kyler, not sure either is a great fit for what KOC likes to do with deep on time passes. But either one could be great backups too.

I could have added Flacco, Richardson and Mariota too (poll only allowed so many.

Plenty of solid QB's to pick from to be good backups. Richardson probably makes the least sense, these reports are a bit bonkers to me. His completion percentage is super trash and he took himself out of a game because he was tired! QB3 maybe for him though. I'd take him over Brosmer right now.

I actually think if there went other option Geno Smith would be fine for the vet min but I feel like he is a guy that takes a while to get in a system kinda like Russell Wilson. I'd feel confident he would do better than last year though.

Just something to think about when it comes to offense and QB play last year for the Vikings. Jacoby Brissett threw for 500 more yards than the whole Vikes team. That bar for improvement is pretty low.

He is gonna be cheap so we can fill out the roster better and he looks like the likely pick, but we'll see. I still wonder if KOC can create a system that fits both JJ and Kylers skillset more though. Kyler likes to play more off schedule and more in that shorter to intermediate range. I think that fits JJ currently more too.

1. There is a pretty big difference between a vet QB like Murray doing what he does and a rookie QB just going out there and doing whatever. There was some boneheaded things he did on the field and I wonder if that's part of what Alec Lewis of the Athletic was talking about when he said McCarthy was less prepared doing the other stuff aside from the on field things that are more obvious. McCarthy seems like a great dude but he does need to figure somethings out (including mechanically and being more disciplined there) which if he can stay healthy I think he still might do. Meanwhile Murray has done a lot of this stuff already. If the Oline stays healthy and doesn't suck he should have plenty to fun running around throwing to multiple pro bowl level guys and handing the ball off to Mason and some other decent RB.

2. It's been clear that O'Connell is a fan of mobile QBs and has been shading that way for a while. He was one himself his athletic abilities are a big reason he was drafted as high as he was. The athletic ability can get you into trouble and only take you so far but obviously running around to make plays is pretty handy. Rookie season Caleb Williams sometimes looked like shit but then he runs around does like 4 backflips and throws up a prayer...that's a dime to some guy on the sideline for a completion. Murray has that ability. O'Connell ain't gonna sit around and be sad about it.

Ultimately the Vikings got handed (some of their own doing) some real problems at QB which included loss on coaching staff, loss of vet players (Bradbury leaving and Mike Kelly not being healthy was not a small thing) , integrating a new vet QB, offensive line injuries everywhere and oh yeah and 2 rookie QBs one coming off a knee injury. They did try and go out and add to that oline but it didn't go well. It was sort of the perfect storm. Keep in mind they traded for Sam Howell another mobile QB but they couldn't get him going so they had to get another guy in Wentz who at one point in his career was plenty mobile.

Now I'm not saying everything will be fixed and it's gonna go great this year but last year was a bit of a perfect storm and whoever's fault of the failings of last year is either gone or is not gonna want to repeat that...partly because their job is maybe on the line and they are clearly not gonna roll with McCarthy they are getting a vet guy that will probably be a starter and I wouldn't be shocked if they added another vet QB with some starting experience in one way shape or form even if they are just on the Practice squad. McCarthy might have to beat out someone else to even be #2 QB. I don't expect that but I don't think it's gonna be handed to him. Brosmer I like but he obviously isn't safe either. The Cowboys signed Sam Howell and they already have Dak and Milton. The bottom line is last year's overall team wasn't good enough and the 2 biggest issues was QB play and oline. Those 2 don't have to be like super duper awesome just halfway decent and the Vikings are a playoff team again easily. I know people want more than that but I also have seen teams get in and make a run that people didn't expect...it's the Vikings so I don't have my hopes up but it's still a thing that could happen.

And I should say I agree that Murray and McCarthy may have some similar strengths and so...this might benefit everyone bringing in Murray to pair with McCarthy.

If I were to bet right now. I see a KOC / Kyler offense not working well. The things KOC wants to do most is the things Kyler is worst at! Deep on time accurate passes. Hitting that 25 yard out or in cut, thats just not what Kyler is good at.

However there are things Kyler is good at like you say. He is super evasive, nice pocket presence, scrambles and makes nice off schedule throws on the run. But I kind of feel like Jets is also bad at that. How often in his career has Jets made great plays off scramble drills? It's not what he does. His best ability is on time elite routes. Not backyard ball either.

I'm not saying it ultimately wouldn't work decently well. Superbowl though? I don't think so barring a top 1-3 defense.

Saying all this, I'm still fine bringing in Kyler. With JJ missing 3/4ths of his games and not exactly lighting it up either, he's not a guy we can fully commit to. I can see a scenario where Kyler gets hurt and JJ comes in to save the day too.

We simply can't have a crappy QB room like we did last year. We need a better 1,2 and 3 QB play!
