I know Lip and I definitely were interested in Grant Williams at least as a depth guy as a PF. It seemed like it may have made sense to acquire him in the deal instead of Josh Green. Tonight I was like hey what are his measurements anyways.
Grant Williams
6'5.75" in socks and 6'9.75" wingspan he was 240 lbs with 5% body fat at the combine.
Josh Green
6'4.5" in socks and 6'9.75" wingspan and was 214 lbs at the combine.
Of course then you look at athletic ability.
Williams had a what seems like a pretty good lane agility score for a PF at 10.83 but an underwhelming 26" standing vert and and 31.5" max vert. He did 20 reps of the bench press top of the class for people who participated.
Green had a 10.68 lane agility score and 30.5" standing very and 39.5" max vert. No bench press numbers it seems for this year.
So basically what separates these guys is an inch or so of length and a significant amount of girth for Williams and for Green better athletic ability.
Another consideration is Williams is 2 years older both guys were born in November.
So to some extent the reality is these guys made basically the same amount of money for one year and are roughly the same length but one guy is thicker stronger and the other is quicker and more athletic and Green is 2 years younger and hasn't turned 26 yet. I think we know now why Green is currently on the roster and not Grant Williams.
The weight is a big factor though which is why Williams is much better suited to play PF.
That being said, Josh Green is a classic 3&D, low-usage wing and like you said his age is aligned with our core. I still think he has a chance at starting at forward next to Jaden with Ayo subbing in for him relatively early.
Yep that weight is significant but Williams is more undersized in terms of length than I realized.
If we are looking at a somewhat versatile backup/rotation or maybe spot starter maybe Trey Lyles is a better option and they got him for the vet min. In this deal they got a guy like Green as a still young complimentary wing with actual experience in playoffs etc. Oh and also leaving a Lebron sized hole at PF? Seems like a solid plan all things considered. I'd guess the Hornets saw moving either Williams or Green's salaries (both are useful but overpaid) as a benefit to them and the Wolves to some extent picked Green. You have to wonder what the Hornets are gonna do with all the frontcourt players they have including Grant Williams, DFS and Royce O'Neal that are vets although all undersized to some extent at the PF spot.

You must have been skimming that chapter of free agency, monster. Grant Williams was the piece sent out for Royce and Grayson...

That was Miles Bridges. It's hard to keep track though there has been a lot of player movement!

Damn! I'm the one who skimmed through that chapter!!
Miles Bridges carries some off-the-court drama that I suspect TC would not touch...
This is a fairly minor thing but with the Hornets deal Mouhamadou Gueye rerouted there likely saved the Wolves some money. His option for the upcoming season was picked up by the Bulls so he could be traded. One of the hold ups of the trade was he couldn't be dealt till July 9 because he had signed later in the season so he couldn't be dealt right away. His deal is partially guaranteed so the Wolves wouldn't have owed him a full vet min salalry but it likely saved them at least a million sending him to the Hornets. So you could say that reduces what they are paying or money received back in the trade or what they are paying Josh Green by a million or so.

Spotrac indicated his contract was completely non-guaranteed. But maybe something wasn’t reported correctly…

You can't trade a guy that isn't on a contract. You have to opt into an option (player may need to opt into their option of it's a player option) to be able to trade a player.

The guarantee date for Gueye is Jan 10th, similar to PJ Doziers old deal and apparently Trey Lyles deal. I'm guessing it's as simple as the Hornets were more willing to give him a look so he ended up there but perhaps its because a multi team trade needs to have certain number of connections between the teams involved to be legal. Maybe sending Gueye to Charlotte was necessary for that reason. Either way the Wolves could have cut him anytime before Jan 10.

My point was the Wolves likely would have cut him but they didn't have to so it saved them money (what he is guaranteed before Jan 10) because he ended up in Charlotte. The Hornets currently have 18 players on full NBA contracts so I would guess Gueye isn't going to make their roster but they might hold onto him in case they need him to make another trade happen.
