Thoughts on future Wolves GM/POBO

Post by Monster »

Here is a good article on the Nets search I thought it was maybe a good way to bring up some possible guys we could bring in to run things. For me it was interesting because I didn't really have anyone that stuck out in my mind as someone I wanted to be the person to come in if we move on or if they decide to keep him add to Milt.

We bring up names for the head coaching job that are usually well-known, and for good reason, but not many names for the POBO position other than Van Gundy getting tossed around from time to time.

I have a name, and he could be a great selection should Taylor feel like walking through the door to the modern NBA. Mike Zarren, assistant general manager of the Boston Celtics. Here's a blurb about him from NBA.com:

"A lifelong Celtics fan and season ticket holder, Michael Zarren is now the Celtics' Assistant General Manager and Team Counsel. Now in his tenth year with the team after starting as an unpaid intern, Zarren is widely recognized as one of the leaders in the field of advanced statistical analysis of basketball players and teams, and is an important part of the team's strategic planning and player personnel evaluation processes. Zarren is also the team's salary cap expert and lead in-house counsel (for both basketball and business-side issues), and is responsible for the development of new technologies for team use, including the team's best-in-class statistical database and video archive/delivery system.

A graduate of Harvard Law School (where he served as editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology) and of the University of Chicago, Zarren has also served as a law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Zarren was also previously a management consultant for Fortune 500 firms across a wide variety of industries. A native of Swampscott, Zarren is a member of the bars of New York and Massachusetts and of the Board of Overseers of The Waring School."

Sounds like a smart dude, that's for sure. He seems pretty damn rooted in Boston though given his history. I wonder how hard it would be to extricate him from there?

He was in the mix for the Sixers GM job three or four years ago, but pulled out for whatever reason. In Minnesota's defense, we have a way better situation in terms of talent already here than Philadelphia did. He's a really intelligent guy. You'd think he'd want to have a go at it on his own instead of being under Ainge's control, so to speak.

Is it possible for a basketball guy to come in and bring a stats guy like that to lean on?

As I've already mentioned lately, I fear for the future of the NBA when guys with spreadsheets are the ones making the personnel decisions. I'm convinced you have to have a mix of basketball knowledge and analysis...

No way.
This Boston homer would trade KAT and Wigg to the Celtics for some future Nets pick and Olynyk, Then get fired and return to Boston.

This post has to have been intended as a joke. Every personnel decision has to be signed off by ownership. If it was a joke, then I apologize for taking it too literally.

Zarren seems like a good candidate (thanks for bringing his name up Can) but I also read he also is basically being groomed to take over for Ainge. Ainge turns 57 in March so it's not like he is old but if he thought he had THE guy to take over for him maybe he steps down some at some point and let's Zarren take over. Idk but I would think it's going to take a great situation to get him away from Boston. This situation has the players but it's a pretty unstable one past that right now.
